I really don't know when I realized I was kinky, but I do have a vivid memory of what must have been one of my first BDSM fantasies. I must have been about 13 when I was leafing through The National Geographic's volume, The Indians of the Americans, and came across a painting of a naked woman tied to a wooden framework. Shall we put it delicately? Instant interest!
That was, how shall I phrase it... a long time ago. Gentlemen may tell their ages, but as a number of folks will tell you, at times, I'm no gentleman. Suffice it to say that one of my running jokes is that my first nipple clips were trilobites... live ones.

I've been writing most of my adult life. I started out as a newspaper journalist and spent a bit of time in South East Asia as a foreign correspondent. Then, I earned my doctorate and taught journalism for a while.
The big turning point came in 1992 when I met Libby Donahue, the woman who is now my wife, and she invited me to move in with her so I could finish a project that I had started a few months before, a how-to book for heterosexual BDSMers. At that time, there really wasn't much nonfiction literature around. The Gays had The Leatherman's Handbook by Larry Townsend and the Lesbians had The Lesbian SM Safety Manual by Pat Califia. There was also, but I didn't know about it, a book like the one I was planning: SM-101 by Jay Wiseman. Fortunately, for my peace of mind, Jay was self-published and circulating his book almost exclusively on the West Coast.
With Libby's support, I finished the book and found a publisher. Since then, I've written four more books and survived the bankruptcy of my first publisher. Now I'm with Greenery Press headed by Janet Hardy, and a fine company it is.
On the way, Libby and I founded The Boston Dungeon Society and Diversified Services, a mail-order company and, later, the website for the scene.
After twelve years, we finally decided that neither of us was masochist enough to go through another winter in Boston and we relocated to Delray Beach in Florida, discovering, to our delight, a wonderful local scene that made us incredibly welcome.
