Johann Heinrich Meibom (27 August 1590 in Helmstedt, May 16, 1655, in Lübeck) was a German physician and professor of medicine at the University of Helmstedt, he first practiced for many years as a city physician in Lübeck and wrote numerous medical, historical and philological works.

Life

Johann Heinrich Meibom father was the German historian and poet Heinrich Meibom the Elder from the old Lower Saxon.

Meibom studied in Helmstedt, Wittenberg and Leipzig medicine. In 1619, he graduated from Basel with a Doctor of Medicine Ph.D. In 1620 he became a professor at the University of Helmstedt. He left Helmstedt in 1625 because of the Thirty Years War and was a doctor in Lübeck. 1629 he was a professor and became the primary public health doctor as well as the personal physician of the Prince-Bishop of Lübeck, John X., where he remained until his death in 1655 as Medicus practiced. His successor as City Council Medicus was originally a colleague from Mecklenburg, Paul Neucrantz.

Meibom wrote numerous works, including a medical assessment of Flagellation, under the title "A Treatise on the Use of Flogging in Medicine and Venery". He later added a supplement, exclusively in English, about Flagellation. This style became the "Bestsellers" and was translated into several languages and reissued in the 19 Century.

His son Heinrich Meibom was also important in medicine.

In Lübeck St.-Annen-Museum for Art and Cultural History is a portrait of Johann Heinrich Meibom.
