Irish school strap
The Irish school strap was used by some Roman Catholic teaching orders such as the Irish Christian Brothers as an instrument of corporal punishment.
It was a relatively short implement (about 18" / 45cm long) but thick (about 3/8" / 10mm) so quite painful if administered hard. The thickness was achieved by stitching two or more layers of leather together. At the non-"business end" a handle was shaped to give a better grip.
Although it was commonly given on the hands it was also sometimes administered across the buttocks. There are apocryphal stories of the "business end" having been given extra ferocity by weights sewn in. Unlike tawses, there does not appear to have been any standard or approved design of the Irish school strap, although all were of similar dimensions. Some straps were made of tan leather and others of black.
The general nickname used by the Irish Christian Brothers for the strap was the "leather". Spoken in an Irish accent it sounded like "de ledder".

The Irish School Strap was a leather strap normally of around 16 inches to 18" in length 1.5 to 2" in width, with a thickness varying from 8mm to approx 12mm in 2, 3, or 4 layers of Leather, depending normally on the age of the Boys (or girls) it was intended for.
The Leather Strap had a shaped handle at the Teacher's end, and it could often be found Stiffened and Weighted internally on enhanced models. It was a beautifully crafted instrument but was not admired by those on the receiving end. It made a fantastic impact landing on Palms or Backsides.
This Traditional Irish School strap is a beautiful example of the type used throughout Ireland in schools and homes up until the mid '70s and is a great piece to add to your collection of Memorabilia. This one is made using two layers of 4mm thick Bridle Hide stitched together completely around the edge. Measuring 18 by 1.5 inches it is over 8mm thick but not weighted or stiffened internally.
It is black in color as shown in the pictures and stamped on the rear with weight in grams and M for medium, all the edges are beveled and burnished to a smooth black finish.
