Interview

RobM: Good Morning, Aprion, can I just welcome you to the Spanking Art Wiki and thank you for the time you're taking for this interview. You arrived as a relative unknown to my 'Radar' on Animeotk.com so I'm not aware of your progression online beyond that. You've just passed your one hundredth spanking picture uploaded and I'd like to ask how long you've been drawing spanking in your art and whether you have more than one site that you regularly contribute to?

Aprion: I've drawn spanking pictures since I was, I think eight years old or so. Though not as frequently. It wasn't until I discovered Animeotk that I started to draw them more frequently. Up until then I didn't really have a reason to. I mean who was I gonna show them to?
Aside from Aotk I draw the occasional picture for Furry Ai. And I upload some random, non spanking related things, to my Deviant Art Page.

R: To briefly follow that, if you didn't have much need to draw large volumes of Spanking Art until relatively recently, does this mean you had other outlets for your spanking interests?

A: Before I started drawing them more frequently I kept myself busy with collecting photographs, stories, movies, clips, basically anything spanking related. Now that I draw more frequently I've all but stopped collecting those.

R: During, what I would call people's 'formative period', do you imagine that this influx of often commercial material affected your tastes and helped you shape your interests and pairings?

A: I honestly can't say. I suppose it might have been of some influence. Though I've always been a bit picky about the stuff I collect. For example, if something is obviously staged it's a big turn-off for me. As for pairings, I enjoy watching M/F, F/F even F/M equally. I'm not really a fan of M/M, but I'm not particularly bothered by it either.

R: Is this because you are able to better create your own fantasies and shape the scenarios the way you like it, as opposed to the way someone else saw it?

A: Yes and no. I rarely put any of my fantasies to paper. But it's nice to be able to if I really felt like it. I guess it's more because making something, anything at all, gives me as much satisfaction as actually looking for stuff. It's all about creativity for me. I like to come up with stories and image scenarios. And I like to share them. Likewise I enjoy watching and reading what other people come up with. To satisfy my need for creativity. The more creative I'm being, the less I feel the need to find it elsewhere. Does that make sense?

R: Do you consider there to be any repeating themes in your pictures?

A: Not really. Aside from the fact that most of my spankings are punishment spankings. But other than that I don't really have a recurring theme. Just a few recurring characters.

R: One of those characters is your fantasy style spanker character - the daemon Keane. How did you come up him for a character?

A: Keane is a bit of a complicated case. I was looking to create a strong Dominant character. His physical appearance is based mostly on an old fantasy role-playing character I've used long ago. With some light tweaking to make him more appealing to a general audience. His personality however is a little more complex. To put it simply he is, in essence, the personification of my dominant playful side. And as such he can do things I could never do. Or would want to do. And he possesses traits I wish were a little stronger in myself, such as his endless confidence.

R: I see, so, you do imagine a little of yourself inside this character?

A: I think every artist puts a little of themselves into everything they create. I certainly do. It helps to bring them to life.

R: And his 'victims' (Seems a better word to use than spankee's since none seem to go willingly!) tend to be the characters - or caricatures - of people you know quite well. Is there a long list of people wishing to fall foul of Keane and star in a drawing of yours?

A: Actually ever since I drew the first picture of him, and especially after the first comic he starred in, there has been a steady trickle of people who emailed me saying they wouldn't mind getting spanked by such a hot looking demon. People seem to like him an awful lot. And that's what surprised me the most. I never imagined that such a character could become so popular. Besides it's fun to use characters based on people. They get a kick out of it. And for me it's easier to draw a believable persona rather then inventing one out of the blue. Of course if I do use a character based on a real person I make it a point to first of all get their permission, and to discuss the content of the drawing or story. When I draw I show everything, because frankly I hate censorship. So the only time I will hide a character's genitals is if someone specifically asks me not to show those.

R: From where do you draw a lot of your inspiration for pictures, is any of it based on personal experience?

A: As odd as it may sound, the best ideas mostly come to me at random. Often from something completely non spanking related. A movie scene. A line from a book. A random picture. Or just something silly someone said. My second greatest source of inspiration often comes from chatting with friends. Or even a random comment on one of my drawings.

R: When such inspiration comes to you, do you often see the scene at once, how quickly does a drawing 'unfold' as it was?

A: I kind of see the scene like a movie clip in my head. I can sort of browse through it and then select one of the still frames as the actual picture. Which then makes its way to the paper. Usually it comes out exactly as I see it before my mind's eye. And occasionally it becomes something different halfway through as I get a slightly more amusing idea at the last second.

R: This must come in very useful for making large comics and multi page drawings. I suppose it's a form of storyboarding?

A: Definitely. Making a comic is a lot like making a storyboard. Except of course a storyboard isn't as detailed as an actual comic page, but of course not every comic artist goes about it the same way.

R: What was the longest comic you've ever drawn and how long did it take to make?

A: The longest comic I've ever drawn was a non spanking related story. It was a story about a little team of superheroes of my own creation and what their life was like. And it spanned well over 200 pages in total. I would've put it up on the net somewhere if it wasn't for the fact that it was drawn ages ago. It is coloured with filch pens and generally has no ink work whatsoever.
One day I hope to rewrite their tale and draw it anew. But that will have to wait. To much spanking art still to do.
But yeah, aside from spanking stories, superhero tales are a big passion of mine. Of course combining the two would also be a fun thing to try. Hmm maybe I'll do that in a future project. Thanks for sparking the idea in my mind. See, inspiration strikes at odd times!

R: I'm glad to hear it! When you think Superhero spankings, I have to ask, what sort of scene do you see. A superhero named Spankaman, for example. Or a supervillain that spanks an inept superhero for a laugh, or something of that nature? The possibilities are fairly limitless - and some more clichéd than others, of course.

A: Haha, a superhero called Spanking. Villains better beware or sitting on those hard prison benches is gonna be a whole new level of uncomfortable.
I've actually been working on a little superhero scenario. It involves a slightly overconfident and reckless heroine breaking into a villain's mansion in order to bring him to justice. However, she is captured by said villain and promptly spanked for, get this, Breaking and Entering. Talk about adding insult to injury. I do enjoy little twists like that, hehehe. One thing I try to do when I design a villain is to make them seem at least slightly sophisticated. I do abhor the often seen oafish villains - or those crime bosses that seem to lack self control - I'm sure you know the type. The plan fails and they go into a raging fit, lording it over their minions and making a fool of themselves.

R: So you say you started drawing around Eight. That is an early age, do you mind if I ask if you hid these drawings or were more open about them?

A: I've always been rather open about it. I was fortunate to have very supportive parents, and we have always been very open about such things in our home.

R: An enviable position, not many parents are accepting of a fetish - if that's how you feel about it?

A: True, I guess I am a little lucky. My parents are very supportive people. And they raised me to be very open-minded and embrace differences. A spanking fetish is just one of those things. They may not understand the appeal of it, but they respect and support my choices so long as I'm happy with them.

R: Do you consider Spanking to be a fetish and a compulsion to you?

A: A fetish, definitely yes. A compulsion, hardly. It's not like it's an absolute must for me, and I can be satisfied without it. More something that adds spice.

R: And at that age of eight, do you think your parents considered it to be early signs of a sexual fetish?

A: I'm honestly not sure what they were thinking at the time. They probably thought it was just a phase at first, or just something I picked up watching cartoons. There were a lot of spankings in cartoons in those days and for a time I did stop drawing the stuff. (I don't know why I stopped, my mind probably found something else to occupy its time with). Until I hit puberty and went to art school. By then my desire to draw anything spanking related had been lying dormant for a while. But I quickly got back into things (I blame puberty and hormones for that) and that's when I actually flat out said it.

R: Can I inquire where you think your fetish came from?

A: You mean what sparked my initial interest and set me on the *path of the spanko,* so to speak?
My initial interest in spanking was sparked by an old Tom and Jerry cartoon. In this particular episode Tom got stuck in a fence and pulled himself, and the board he was stuck in (there was a small hole in the centre in which he got stuck. cartoons and the laws of physics), from the fence.
Then later because of the wooden plank around his waist, he got stuck trying to jump through a window after Jerry. Jerry then shut the window so he couldn't escape. Tied up his tail with a piece of string and proceeded to paddle him with a breadboard style paddle. Until his behind blinked like a red warning light.
I remember watching that cartoon and feel a tingling sensation in the pit of my stomach. A mixture of excitement and apprehension. From that day forwards I tried to find whatever spanking related stuff I could. Which wasn't easy of course since I didn't know exactly what I was looking for at the time. Plus there was no internet back then either. Which led to me creating my own spanking pictures.

R: Can I infer from this you feel your interest in spanking to be something already inside you?

A: Oh yes. I'm fairly certain that a fetish like spanking, or any other fetish, or even a person's preference for a certain gender, is something you are born with. All it takes is the right trigger to make you aware of it.

R: I partly asked before if any of your inspiration comes from personal experience, do you mind if we talk about your interests in spanking itself?

A: Not at all. What exactly would you like to know.

R: I guess the first question between strangers should be: Have you ever spanked?

A: Yes I have spanked. Twice thus far. The first was a former girlfriend. The second is a bit of a complicated story I really can't share. As much as I'd like to. The person involved wouldn't appreciate it.

R: That's fine, no-one would wish you to play 'kiss and tell'. I'll try and phrase questions to be about your perspective. How have your experiences matched the perfection you find in art?

A: Reality is never anything like fantasy, as most of us know. But my experiences have been satisfying. Both for myself and for the spankee involved at the time. Of course the first time was slightly awkward. What with being inexperienced and all. But we managed in the end. I remember I kept asking constantly if she was OK because I was afraid of hurting her for real. Which is the last thing I wanted to do. But she was a good sport about it and took it well. Even if she was pretty sore afterwards.

R: Have you ever considered how spanking might fit into a lifestyle for you?

A: Oh I would jump with joy if I could find a steady girl who is into spanking and we could make it a part of our relationship/lifestyle. I mean who wouldn't enjoy putting their sweetheart over their lap and giving her a nice fun, playful bottom warming, only to cuddle up together afterwards - or do something else - but I'll leave that up to your imagination.

R: Only Playful? You wouldn't enjoy, for example, a Domestic Discipline arrangement?

A: That would certainly be a lifestyle option for me. Though I haven't given it too much thought seeing as I, at the time of writing this, lack a significant other in my life. If I am lucky enough to find someone who would consider such a lifestyle we would have to talk about it in great detail. Domestic Discipline in a relation is not something to be taken too lightly. For the good of the spankee.

R: Thank you very much for your time to do this interview, Aprion. I hope you enjoyed this process and good luck for the future!
