The House of Dominance was one of the first commercial houses of bondage with professional Mistresses, located 6440 Selma Ave. , Hollywood, California. If not the first, certainly the most notorious! The second House of Dominance was used for the movie, "Hardcore" (1979) starring George C. Scott. The massage and my first adventure in professional domination and humiliation. I would not willingly do it again, having learned that severe pain is not my trip.
But if it happens to be yours, I can highly recommend the House of Dominance - it would seem to be a painfully rewarding experience for those who enjoy this form of recreation. To each his own, as I've always said.
A few days later I visited the House of. Dominance to chat with Sheldon Ross and to take photographs in the newly-completed Black Dungeon. "Is there anything your girls would refuse to do?" I asked. "They won't do anything sexual. Also we won't mar the customers' bodies or hurt them severely in any way-nothing extreme."
Again he complained about the difficulty in luring women to his establishment. "It's just a matter of getting some confidence out of them, because we have the place for them. I really feel that women would trip out on this place. They don't have to use me-they can have Kate or Lonnie or one of the others. It's even okay for a guy who wants me to do him, as long as he stays away from the sexual thing."
Aha, I thought, how could Ross resist a seductive woman, especially while he was dominating and humiliating her? "But if a woman wanted to get into something with you ..." I asked coyly. "She can get sexy, but not sexual," he replied. "Whether I wanted to or not, I wouldn't do it. It's against the law, and we don't get into anything that's against the law."
What, I asked, holds women back from getting into domination? "I really don't know. I imagine that they think this place is only for men, that they think there's no places for women. There's just something about women-they don't go to this type of place easily. I guess they're more scared than men. Also, they're conditioned differently."
Ross, a pleasant but no-nonsense man of about 30, takes an unusual pride in his business. Says he: "This place is my art form, my creative release. I have all these ideas running around in my head, and I create them here. It's also a business to me, and we want it to run well, and to be respectable. We don't cheat our customers. We try to give them as much knowledge as we have, and we're constantly trying to gain new knowledge."
- INSIDE THE DUNGEON
The Black Dungeon is indeed a haven for slaves. Its sinister atmosphere grips the senses and knots the stomach. Instruments of torture and humiliation, some vastly complicated and some starkly simple, await their victims. Color murals depicting scenes of people in dreadfully punishing situations decorate the walls. A veined floor-to-ceiling mirror enhances the feeling of fear and confinement.
New equipment in the Black Dungeon is not only frightening, but inventive. For example, there's a large black coffin which accommodates any size person. It's liped with foam and has black velvet inside. "You'll get into it bound up," says Ross. "It's kind of confining."
A "bondage board" restrains a person to a flat board, standing up. It has leather restraints all the way up and down the arms, legs and body, imprisoning a person from head to toe.
There's also a hoist-and-puliey system: the dominatrix can hoist her victim vertically or horizontally, place him upside down, or hoist him in one direction and pull him in another. All manner of pain is contained within this evil machine.
A spanking bar allows Mistress Kate and her cruel cohorts to lean a person over it and tie him in about nine different directions. This devious device has several bars attached to it with rings everywhere, from the floor to the ceiling. "It's the kind of contraption where you can be inventive and create your own," says Ross, a gleam in his eyes.
"Then we have sort of a sitting - I don't know what you'd call it, we just invented it-sort of a sitting post, where you can be seated in different leaning positions and be restrained.
We'll have the regulation hard wooden table where you can be tied down in 9000 different directions, and also a chair which can be used in various ways. Of course we'll have a-cross in there which can be used in various ways."
One of the highlights of the new Black Dungeon is an altar, with the veined mirror behind it, where the Queen will sit and look down on her slaves. The room's lighting is a combination of dim brown and red, which adds just the right evil touch to the dungeon. Ross has spent thousands of dollars on the remodeling and additions, including $1000 alone on new leather equipment.
The Red Devil Room-where I underwent my painful domination experience-will continue to be in operation, but the Black Dungeon is special. Price? Here's one area where inflation hasn't driven up the cost.
Domination sessions in both rooms of torture are still $50 per hour, $30 for a half hour. This includes every type of bondage, punishment and humiliation that the mind can conceive.
- LONNIE
A word about Lonnie. A diminutive package of dynamite, Mistress Lonnie is the head dominatrix at the House of Dominance. She stands five-two and weighs but 110 Ibs., but she is strong - very strong.
Lonnie is an olive-skinned beauty with long black hair and a freckled face, a trim figure and knowing eyes. She speaks four languages. Says Ross: "All the passives who have ever been in this place really love her. They really like the way she works, because she works hard. She thinks hard, and she tries to be very creative and inventive."
Lonnie is also an expert masseuse. If she taught Kate all she knows, Lonnie must be fantastic. "Sometimes we give the customers a free massage while they're waiting," said Ross. And when those customers finally enter the Black Dungeon or Red Devil Room, they'll be given the domination experience of their lives. I'll testify to that and I had only a "light" taste.

- EPILOGUE
There is a tragic P.S. to this story. At deadline time we learned that the House of Dominance was destroyed by a fire-just a day or two after the new Black Dungeon was completed. Defective wiring caused the early morning blaze, which totally gutted the interior of the building. But owner Sheldon Ross assures us that a bold new Phoenix will rise from the ashes.
He has already started rebuilding on the same site, and he expects to be back in business by mid-July.
The new House of Dominance will feature much of the same equipment as the one of old, but Ross says he is incorporating some dramatically different concepts in his rebuilt establishment.
