19th-century depiction

A fairy is a supernatural being. Fairies may be depicted as male or female, but young females are the most common image. They typically wear short dresses with ragged hems or see-through clothing and have wings (generally translucent and without feathers). Thus pictures of fairies are an excuse to depict attractive young females in scanty clothing and even upskirt images.

There is a fetish of dressing up as a fairy. Practitioners often wear frilly knickers, ballet dresses and patterned leotards. For men, dressing as a female fairy can be a form of cross-dressing.

Fairy is also a slang term for an effeminate male, especially one believed to be gay.
