Dennis Leroy Hof (✦October 14, 1946 – October 16, 2018) was an American brothel owner. He owned seven legal brothels in Nevada, most notably the Moonlite BunnyRanch. Hof was also a Republican candidate in 2018 for the Nevada Assembly, to which he was posthumously elected less than one month after his death.

Personal life

In Cathouse: The Musical, Hof revealed that he only dated prostitutes; "I don't date civilians [non-working girls]." The documentary series showed several of his relationships with employees, such as adult film star Sunset Thomas and Heidi Fleiss. In his memoir, Hof disclosed a lack of interest in monogamy and detailed how every one of his relationships ended due to his own infidelity. Hof was a close friend of Fox News personality Tucker Carlson. He once stated that he communicated with Carlson daily to give him ideas for his show.

Death

Hof died in his sleep at his Love Ranch South in Crystal, Nevada, on October 16, 2018, following a party for his 72nd birthday that had been attended by Joe Arpaio [2], Heidi Fleiss, Grover Norquist, and Ron Jeremy, the last of whom found Hof unresponsive. Police did not suspect foul play at the time of his death, and no one who was with him the night before noticed any signs of ill-health. Hof's legislature campaign manager Chuck Muth said that Hof was "having the time of his life" that night. It was concluded that he died from a heart attack caused by atherosclerosis and hypertensive heart disease

Archived article

Dennis Hof is the owner of two legal brothels in Nevada, near Carson City: the Moonlite Bunny Ranch and BunnyRanch Two. Unlike the other Nevada brothel owners organized in the Nevada Brothel Owners' Association who prefer to keep a low profile so as to not jeopardize their business, Hof tries everything to create publicity for his brothels and thereby circumvent the Nevada ban on brothel advertising: he often appears on talk shows, employs porn stars and other women who have entered the news, has given free offers to returning soldiers etc.

In his media appearances, Hof is often pitted against anti-prostitution advocates, ranging from former prostitutes to women's advocacy group heads. During the summer of 2005, Hof gave a media interview arguing passionately for the regulation of prostitution nationwide.[3] In that article, he also relates how he entered the prostitution business: he was dating a prostitute in Reno when an aging brothel owner offered to sell the business to him. He later went on to date Sunset Thomas when she worked in the brothel.

On April 23, 2001, an article about Dennis Hof and the Bunny Ranch appeared in The New Yorker.[4]

Dennis Hof has appeared in American Pimp, The Tyra Banks Show, the Howard Stern Show, and on Dr. Phil. The HBO shows Cathouse and Cathouse: The Series revolve around Hof and his brothels.
