Deepthroating

Deepthroating is a sexual act in fellatio, in which the whole erect penis, down to the base, is taken into the mouth and throat, of another person. Many men derive great sexual pleasure from this act, since the penis can be stimulated by the mouth, tongue, and throat of their partner.

The adjective deep and the noun throat are often concatenated to form the verb "deepthroat".

Size issues

There are very large erect penises (e.g., girth, length, glans size) and also very small mouths. It is possible that a penis will be too large for a particular mouth and throat. The problem is largely that of girth (and glans size, if much greater than shaft girth) and the ability to open the mouth, as extremely few penises are too long, if they can be successfully introduced into the throat, given the length of the oesophagus. Nonetheless, extremely long penises will pose problems shorter ones do not, even if they can be fully inserted, for they will have to be withdrawn a greater distance to allow the receiver to breathe periodically.

Even substantial girth or an outsized glans can be accommodated with sufficient determination, practice, and cooperation.

Penis and mouth piercings are a contraindication (especially when on both partners) as they will sometimes catch on tissues, and the motions involved in successful deep throat are such that a tear can happen before it is even suspected there has been a snag. When both are pierced, there is a higher chance of tearing since the piercings can catch on each other.

Reflex problems

There are several automatic mechanisms related to the mouth and throat which have the effect of protecting against choking, or swallowing something so large as to block either the esaphogus or the windpipe. They are generally referred to as the gag reflex or the retch reflex. The first is related to a feeling of choking and is usually followed by coughing or 'hacking' (sometimes very urgent indeed) which will often eject the blocking item. The second refers to an abdominal reaction which often leads to vomiting. Again, this will often clear an obstructing item.

Neither are acceptable during oral sex, and so the deep throat receipient must learn to suppress them, especially the gag reflex. Suppression is routinely done by circus performers (eg, in sword swallowing) and by those who learn to 'chug' drinks, perhaps in college contests. And, of course, by all those who learn to deep throat with skill and enthusiasm. Practice, and a willingness to become familiar with the powerful, and initially quite startling, sensations, is required for learning. There are many reports from dominant men that they have successfully 'taught' many how to successfully receive. Indeed, the star actress in the movie Deep Throat (Linda Lovelace) was so taught by her boyfriend / agent, Chuck Traynor, according to each of them in later accountes of the making of the movie.

It is not a good idea, if it is possible to do so at all, to suppress these reflexes entirely, as not everything which might evoke them will be a penis. They will still have a protective function.

Aftermath

Successful deep throat, especially when the man is in control during it, often leaves swollen lips, and throat tissues. Many receipients enjoy the feeling of these in the day or so it will usually take for the swelling to go down.

Safety

The throat and neck are very complex structures and substructures with many critical functions, many quite delicate. Blood vessels (eg, those supplying the brain), nerves (eg, speech motor control nerves to the layrnx or those involved in swallowing coordination), organs (eg, thyroid, parathyroid, ...), etc. Forced deep throat is likely to damage one or more of them, possibly permanently. This is not a technique with trivial risk, but can nevertheless be accomplished with acceptable risk by avoiding use of large muscles (ie, forcing using strength) by either party to overcome difficulties. Both parties should realize that pain and damage sensations are somewhat suppressed whilst sexually excited (ef, back scratches or tissue bruises which are a suprise when later noticed), and this is true during deep throat as well.

The receiver MUST be in a relaxed state in order to reduce risks sufficiently to be even approximately acceptable, and if the man is free to move, he MUST take active responsibility for his partner's safety. Situations in which the man is unable to move (ie, bound in some manner) are somewhat different in that the receiver must take full safety responsibility for both. If these conditions are impossible for any reason, the deep throat session should be postponed, perhaps being replaced by less extreme oral sex, or by something else.

Care must be taken to withdraw the penis frequently to permit breathing. Anything near to a normal thrusting rate will certainly do so, if the penis is withdrawn sufficiently far, and the receiver breathes on the outstroke. This is an aspect of control (by a dominant man) that many submissives find very welcome, gratifying, and even arousing. The receiver will usually feel, especially whilst learning to take a penis into the throat, that there is not enough possiblity for breathing. This feeling is very urgent and must be sensibly handled whilst learning. Breath holding practice will be useful, eg, swimming underwater for those with access to swimming quality water.

On the man's side, the primary risk is teeth. These must never be closed, even in playful teasing, as the erect penis is essentially a high pressure hydraulic mechanism with blood as the working fluid. Damage to the tunica membrane (from sharp teeth applied with the high force jaw muscles can easily deliver), or the hydraulic resevoirs (eg, fracture from bending 'too much'), can be permanent. And, any inury which causes bleeding may lead to considerable, perhaps dangerous, blood loss.

For both parties, there is some danger of infection if either is already infected, or if there are skin breaks on any of the penis, the lips, interior of the mouth (eg, gumline, interior cheeks, etc), or the throat or esophagus. Few infecting organisms will survive contact with stomach acid, so there is reduced chance of infection beyond the bottom of the esaphogus.

History in porn films

Deepthroating was featured in the 1972 porn film Deep Throat, which brought widespread attention to the act and popularized it for many Americans. Of the thousands of women who have performed in Pornographic films and videos over the decades, relatively few have demonstrated this talent, although it is becoming more common. Accomplished deepthroat performers can stick their tongue out while holding the position and looking at the camera. Penises that are long but not thick are more often seen being deepthroated than thick penises; rarely are penises that are both long and thick deepthroated.

As a fetish

As popular as this sexual act is in pornographic films as indicated by the popularity of pornographic actors who can perform it, it is not usually specifically represented in adult video as a distinct fetish, and usually is found under the generic category "oral". Many female performers who also specialize in anal can also deepthroat, thus many anal fetish videos also feature deepthroat.

Receiver dominated

Often, deepthroat is portrayed in rough-sex settings in a manner referred to as "Throat gagging" and "Face fucking", which are usually faster and more dominated by the male who attempts to force the mouth to penis contact deepthroat - even sometimes going to extremes when the person deepthroating indicates that they do not enjoy the deepthroat measurements of the act. If the deepthroater is a woman, she may wear eye makeup that runs when her eyes water from the gagging when the penis is in her throat cutting off air supply. This can make a woman look defiled by the act and some find it stimulating. In some scenes, the deepthroating woman may cough up saliva or vomit as a result of the roughness and/or depth of the penetration.

Performer dominated

When the person performing the deep throat dominates the deepthroat scene, the act is usually slower, more calculated with the actor performing for the camera. As a by-product of the deepthroat act, large amounts of thick saliva are released, lubricating the throat so that the penis can fit into the throat more easily. Most people also shed tears while deepthroating. Some performers choose not to eat for hours before performing in order to avoid vomiting. Some performers claim deepthroating as their "specialty", but often find their limits when performing with larger male actors.

Deepthroat in the 1970s

Following Linda Lovelace's famous performance, only two other actresses of the 1970s era became famous for deepthroat. C.J. Lang, who had a prolific career in porn, had a memorable deepthroat performance in "Anyone But My Husband" where she deepthroated Tony "The Hook" Perez. Annie Sprinkle, another actress discovered by Deep Throat's director Gerard Damiano, frequently deepthroated in her many movies.

Deepthroat in the 1980s

Little Oral Annie is probably the most famous deepthroating porn actress of the 1980s, having performed the act on every actor she worked with including the legendary John Holmes. Other Deepthroat actresses of the 1980s include Janey Robbins, and the early career of Jeanna Fine. Aja, whose career spanned from the late 80s to the early 90s, with a comeback in the 2000s, was also an accomplished deepthroater.

Deepthroat in the 1990s

Jeanna Fine, whose active career has spanned into 3 decades, was one of the first actresses to consider herself a deepthroat artist and has ascended to legendary status for performing the act. Debi Diamond, whose career also began in the 1980s and peaked in the 90s, was a notable deepthroat artist. Late in the decade, Bobbi Bliss became another legendary deepthroater by being one of the few actresses to deepthroat one of porn's largest actors Mandingo. Alexandra Quinn also has a prolific career of deepthroating, spanning from the 1980s to the 2000s.

Deepthroat in the 2000s

By the 2000s, numerous actresses began to emerge as specialists in deepthroat, becoming famous and popular as a result; such as Belladonna, Nikita Denise, Ashley Blue, Violet Marcell, Sunrise Adams, Ava Devine, Briana Banks, Katsumi, Lauren Phoenix, Gia Paloma, Courtney Simpson, Hillary Scott, Tory Lane, Audrey Hollander, Sasha Grey, and Isabella Pacino. Briana Banks claims not to have a gag reflex, so she is able to deep throat quite easily. Annette Schwarz, a German actress, has taken deep throat to new extremes demonstrating the ability to not only deepthroat the largest of penises, but to insert the testicles in her mouth at the same time, in addition to being able to deepthroat two penises at once. Many of recent history's deepthroat artists have gone to win the coveted Female Performer of the Year and other AVN Awards.

Deepthroat on the Internet

Amateur deepthroat artists have been successful having their own site including Heather Harmon's ideepthroat.com, Deb's Deepthroat, and extreme-deepthroat artist CynicalAngel at cynicalangel.com, an amateur model that specializes in deepthroating extra long dildos. Harmon (frequently credited as "Heather Brooke" due to mislabeling on peer-to-peer networks) is notable for being the only known performer to deepthroat a penis while ejaculation simultaneously occurs.

With the 1990s and the rise of gonzo pornography, variations on the act began to appear in some pornographic movies, particular greater emphasis on rough deep throating. For example, the Gag Factor series of films by JM Productions, and Throat Gaggers series of films produced by Red Light District, both feature "rough" deep throating (irrumatio). In the 2000s, the Max Hardcore series of films have featured extreme deep throating intended to cause the female artist to vomit during the sexual act itself, puking on herself and/or sucking on the erect penis even after it is covered with vomit.

In the media

Cynthia Heimel, author of Sex Tips for Girls, attempted to demythologize the act - and the deep throating aspect of Deep Throat - in a section of her book deliberately named after the film. She wrote of the deep throating scenes in the films, "it's all done with mirrors" where the erect penis is skillfully shoved past the performer's cheek, creating the desired visual impression on the screen.[1] However, the act has clearly and repeatedly been demonstrated as possible since this statement was made, especially after the dawn of Internet pornography. The statement that the deep throating acts in Deep Throat were faked is unsubstantiated. In fact, they could not have been faked in the method described by Ms. Heimel, as they were not done from a side view.
