Dame is a French word meaning "lady". In English it is a female rank equivalent to a knight. Sometimes it is used as an old-fashioned respectful mode of address to an older woman.

Occasionally the title 'Dame' is encountered in spanking literature. For example in the spanking novel "The Old Rectory", the main authority of the private school is called 'Dame Hilda Catchpole' and often simply referred to by the author and protagonist as 'the Dame'.
