Cord is a long, thin, flexible length of twisted yarns (strands) of fibre/fiber (rope, for example); (uncountable) such a length of twisted strands considered as a commodity.

1. The burglar tied up the victim with a cord.
2. He looped some cord around his fingers.

Cords in whips

Cords can be used for multi-tail whips, such as floggers, martinets and cats o' nine tails.

Cords can be stiffened with soap to give them about the stiffness of leather.
