Germany has a pronounced organized subculture, including munches, clubs and associations.

There is a Federal union, the Bundesvereinigung Sadomasochismus (BVSM), founded on 31st May, 2003 in Cologne uniting diverse groups and individuals in the SM subculture.

The favourable legal situation gives Sadomasochists in Germany little reason for their cause to go public. The number of people who are open about their inclinations regarding Sadomasochism, in comparison to countries like the USA, small.

Between homosexuals and heterosexuals in the subculture, only loose connections exist. In some parts of the non-commercial subculture reservations exist against the commercial scene.

BVSM becomes a club of clubs on the way to becoming an umbrella organization

At the weekend, the general meeting of the Bundesvereinigung Sadomasochismus eV (BVSM) decided to take important steps to transform a nationwide association of individuals into an umbrella organization for clubs, groups, initiatives and everything else in the field of BDSM. At the end of their two-day meeting in Frankfurt/Main, they decided on a fundamentally changed statute.

Almost 15 years after its founding, the BVSM has not met many expectations but is a body without its own basis and without much impact. That should change fundamentally. In Germany there is already a broad base of long-standing clubs, regulars' tables, initiatives, creative and innovative individuals and more: the basis for an umbrella organization.

Therefore, a year ago, the then newly elected board received the order to present a corresponding new statute. A draft had been available to the members since August and was further developed over the two days in an intensive and controversial discussion and finally passed unanimously with a broad consensus.

Registered associations, previously only intended as so-called “corporate members”, are now members with voting rights, just like individuals, depending on their size. However, the adopted voting key prevents clubs with particularly large numbers of members from becoming overpowering.

Groups and initiatives without a legal form are also members with the right to speak and submit proposals, but without voting rights due to possible legal and organizational problems. The BVSM will support those who wish to set up an eV. Otherwise, it is still possible for representatives of these groups to become personal members with voting rights.

Other legal entities such as dealers, publishers, organizers, studios can become members like individuals.

In order to clarify the claim and mission, the BVSM is striving to be renamed the "Federal Association of Sadomasochism". After all, the oldest and largest clubs in Germany are already members, the BVSM has long stood for BDSM in the lobby list of the Bundestag and there is no other structure with umbrella organization character.

The clubs and groups in which work is done on a daily basis are now its most important members and not just appendages. In order for a strong umbrella organization to develop from this, which can really lobby for BDSM in Germany, the BVSM and the groups mentioned must approach each other.

The board of the BVSM calls on everyone to get in touch with her and will also approach her of her own accord.

The next GA, which is already planned for early summer, will show whether this new structure meets expectations and hopes.

The new version of the statutes will be published on www.bvsm.de in a few days .
