Irving Klaw advertised "Bound in Leather, Book 1", in Irving Klaw Bulletin 74 in 1953. The sequel was promoted the following year.
Through its unlikely characters and impossible fetish costumes, the story and pictures present a peek at sexist, post-war US. These days, we’re not permitted to fantasize about gorgeous women who insist upon being fixed in unyielding bondage while dressed in the tightest of corsets and highest of heels. Yet, this unlikely premise suggested an excellent assortment of scenarios for a gifted illustrator and a diligent writer. The characters create a domestic ideal, where women enjoy showing their fine figures in stockings, corsets and heels to men who appreciate and admire at them. In the first person narrative, Mr. Walk (Klaw spelled backward) meets exotically-garbed Vicki at a play. At her home, he meets her daughter, Nicole, and Fifi, a maid with a French accent. All of the lovely ladies of the Roberts household always wear pumps, sandals or boots with high, thin heels and figure-shaping belts and corsetry, usually of leather.
The first time Mr. Walk sees Nicole, a large suitcase encloses her torso and thigh-high, lace-up, ballet-toe boots hug her legs. Mother, daughter and, sometimes, the maid ask Mr. Walk, and each other, to bind them with rope, belts and other devices. Bondage paraphernalia includes collars, hoods, ingenious gags, arm-binders, chains and a bridle. In addition to luggage, these lovely ladies are firmly attached to chairs, steel frames, a steering wheel, a table and a wagon wheel. In the story, this isn’t punishment; these characters enjoy their exotic confinement, the-tighter-the-better.
We’ve seen Mr. Stanton acclaimed as “The Master of Fetish," and works such as this one helped him to build that reputation. Using both ink and pencil, most of the pictures use grays to show shine, shape and contour, but some are only black and white. The youthful energy of the artist manifests itself in a treasure of ornate bondage details the carefully delineate masks, buckles, cuffs, straps and all the laces that close boots, helmets, collars, gloves, binders and corsets. In addition to the slender, long-legged femmes of the story, he decorates rooms with paintings and sculptures of other fantasy females, similarly attired and restrained.
The anonymous text describes the women in the pictures, their costumes, and restraints. The prose uses conversation to introduce Mr. Walk to the bondage culture lifestyle. The processes of binding, inserting, tightening and walking in high heels is carefully traced in the narrative.
The prose was scanned separately, yielding a 19,000-word text file that was edited to correct spelling. Acrobat Reader provides an option that, with adequate hardware, reads the text out loud.
The original 30 episodes arranged two to five comic panels on a page with a block of text. The optimized ebook breaks the panels apart, placing each picture on a separate page, usually with the words that describe it. Several of the more than 120 pages have only text.
To achieve alignment of text and image, some of the paragraphing has been changed, sentences shortened and a few pictures shown twice. Some illustrations of corsets, legs, shoes and boots are repeated, enlarged beside the complete picture or on a separate page.
For those with bondage and fetish interests, the original material delivers dense erotic content. The optimized ebook presents the conscientiously-crafted, vintage work in a form that respects its quality, and uses a display mechanism that intensifies the viewing experience.
