Albert Samuel Anker (1831-1910) was a Swiss painter and illustrator. He painted with great realism and often portrayed the life of children. He is therefore a good source on this subject in the second half of the 19th century. He has been called the "National Painter" of Switzerland because of his enduringly popular depictions of 19th-century Swiss village life.

Among his works are several that depict school scenes, which give a good impression of teaching in that era, including the canes used by the teachers to threaten and punish the students
