A B&D Community Conceived

From Common Bonds Number 17
by Robin Roberts

A recurrent dream (perhaps nightmare) that I have had for the past thirty years is, perhaps, coming true.

It is all your fault. Not through my efforts, but yours. This little newsletter is fast becoming a full scale magazine published on a regular basis. I wish to place the blame where it really belongs, at your feet. It is because you have been reading these pages we are still going and growing. We are growing because you are reading, not merely because we are writing.

Another dream (perhaps nightmare) is also quickly becoming a reality. It is really a wild one. I visualize the day when there will ba a B & D community. I feel there is a time to put aside the petty jealousies and bickering from the past and grow to trust one another. I would like to take you on a short fantasy journey into my dream community.

Our community will be founded on the idea of fair justice and penalties. It will have very few civil safety codes and fewer victim less crimes. Imagine, if you can a Judicial System that metes out one 'stripe with the cat' for each mile over the speed-limit. These ideas come to me when I get a chance to relax and let my mind wander, or wonder. Fortunately, these ideas can come to pass if we work together. I know, from talking to the other members of the BackDrop staff, that we are ready to make it work.

Some possible ideas (and ways of implementing these ideas) follow:

  1. A fifteen to twenty unit apartment house where all tenants would be members of the B&D community. Each person (or couple, or group) would have separate and private apartments, but we would have a communal 'playroom' where we can be involved with each other. I foresee one or two apartments could be set aside for a live-in cleaning staff, one or two set aside for the operational staff and one or two set aside for visiting 'out of town' guests who would drop by for short visits;
  2. A twenty to forty unit convalescent hospital. We could have one wing set aside for the Staff and another set aside for visitors. This idea is most pleasing to my imagination. We can use the communal kitchen for food preparation and service. (We would train or obtain people into food services. The food would be extraordinarily fine.) The Central Core offices would be used by the Club. If anyone violated the rules, the would be allowed to take up residency in the Intensive Care Unit (and I think we all know the idea of the type of Intensive Care they would receive).
  3. A large two or three story Victorian House. The top floor would be set aside for living quarters for the Club Staff. The next floor would be furnished and would provide out-of-town visitors with a place to stay, with special emphasis on service. The main floor would have Libraries, Lounges, Laundry and kitchens. The below ground space or the basement. (Or is it debasement?) would have.... Well you can use your own fruitful imaginations.
  4. Perhaps a seventy or eighty foot sailing yacht that will allow us to sail the waters of the world spreading the 'word' about our 'spiritual feelings' to the poor savages of the world. Or just to visit the kindred spirits from here to there and back again. You can be sure the craft would be well appointed with every need taken care of. And, oh, the penalties if you fail to measure up.

I have but one thing to offer in respect to these thoughts. It is from a very old book. "For verily, I say unto you: if treated with the love and care it deserves, any dream or thought is within grasp. You need only to believe in that dream and reach out for it" I have been with BackDrop since its conception. I have watched it grow from five members to many hundreds.

I have been with Common Bonds since its conception. I have seen it grow from three pages to thirty-two pages. I saw it grow from sixty copies per issue to over a thousand.

I have been with the Bay Area Bondage and Discipline Community since its conception. I have seen it grow from a handful of people to the size that it is today. I am really happy that we have finally created an Information Exchange that allows us to communicate amongst ourselves. I am happy, and proud, to be a part of our present community, and I look forward.......
