A tutor (also known as a private tutor or coach) is a private instructor (teacher) who teaches a specific educational subject or skill to an individual student. Such one-on-one attention allows the tutor to improve the student's knowledge or skills far more rapidly than in a classroom setting. Tutors are often privately hired and paid by the student or the student's family. Many are used for remedial students or others needing special attention; many provide more advanced material for exceptionally capable and highly motivated students.

Tutoring also occurs when one adult helps another adult student to study a specific course or subject that he/she is taking to get a better result. The adult can also let the student work on his own, and can be there if the student has any questions.

Tutelage, Tuition

"Tutor" can also refer to a guardian. Tutelage is being under the guidance of a guardian or tutor. See also ward.

Tuition means instruction, teaching or a fee charged for educational instruction especially at a formal institution of learning or by a private tutor usually in the form of one-to-one tuition.

Tutors and spanking

In the past, and in some places to the present day, tutors would often be given the in loco parentis right to punish the student, e.g. for things such as slacking, disrespect, or mistakes. This included corporal punishment such as spanking or caning the student's outstretched hands or buttocks. Since these punishments would take place the privacy, the mode of punishment in such a setting would often be slightly less formal and more 'domestic' and personal than in a public place such as a classroom. For example, with the parent's agreement, a tutor could lower the student's pants and underwear for a bare bottom spanking when such a punishment was felt necessary, especially for younger boys.
