Her career was further enhanced by film appearances that began in 1979, despite mixed commentary. She won critical acclaim and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her role in Evita (1996) but has received harsh feedback for other film roles. Madonna's other ventures include being a fashion designer, children's book author, film director, and producer. She has been acclaimed as a businesswoman, and in 2007, she signed the unprecedented US $120 million contract with Live Nation. Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Hanky Panky and Madonna's spanking lifestyle

In 1990, Madonna released the song Hanky Panky which she wrote and produced together with Patrick Leonard. The lyrics begin with:

Come over here!
Some girls they like candy, and others, they like to grind
I'll settle for the back of your hand somewhere on my behind
Treat me like I'm a bad girl, even when I'm being good to you
I don't want you to thank me, you can just spank me, mmm...

In The Arsenio Hall Show (1990), Madonna was interviewed about "Hanky Panky" and talked candidly about her spanking lifestyle. "It's about the girl who likes a good spanky. (...) I'm talking about the spanky you get when you're not bad. (...) I'm talking about the spanky you get when you're good." "You have been spanked really? Recently?" "You mean the kind you get when you're a woman?" "Yeah, the kind you get when you are good." "Definitely." (smiling) "I don't like it really hard though."

Sex, BDSM and Erotica

In the fall of 1990, Madonna did a typically irreverent public service announcement for MTV's Rock the Vote. This was a campaign to encourage young adults (MTV's core audience) to register to vote for the upcoming election. During an improvised song, one of Madonna's dancers gives her a single hand-spank. She concluded the PSA with the warning that anyone who fails to register will "get a spanking". (This ad can be viewed on YouTube.)

In December of 1990, Madonna released a provocative video for her single, "Justify My Love". The video, which contains glimpses of nudity and couples cavorting in BDSM fetish outfits, was quickly banned by MTV. One scene shows a topless dominatrix-type woman (suspenders partly covering her breasts) roughly grabbing a bound man by the hair. Her outfit, which includes a peaked leather hat and black gloves, mimics the iconic Nazi officer ensemble worn by Charlotte Rampling in the controversial film The Night Porter. (Both the film and the video share elements of sadomasochism.)

During the early '90s, Madonna was also a frequent patron of The Vault, a famous New York BDSM club. She used the club for a photoshoot for her fetish-packed picture book called Sex. This controversial book, published in 1992, explores kinky aspects of sex, exhibitionism, and sadomasochism. One photo taken in a dungeon-like room at The Vault shows a topless Madonna wearing leather pants, boots, and a military-style cap flogging a bound woman in a tight latex outfit.

The book was released as an accompaniment to her fifth studio album, Erotica, which was released a day earlier. Photos and videos for the album show Madonna dressed as a dominatrix with a mask and brandishing a riding crop. Scenes filmed at The Vault also appear in the video for the title track along with images of bondage, pony play, and semi-nude figures in leather harness outfits. The sexual content in both the book and album was generally criticized for being vulgar, raunchy, and non-erotic.

In 1993 Madonna returned to acting in the erotic thriller Body of Evidence. Jacqueline Omerta, fetish actress and founder of Pacific Force, was hired as a consultant to teach Madonna how to behave like a dominant for the film.

Closing out the decade, Madonna performed in a music video for "Beautiful Stranger", written for the film soundtrack to Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). At the end of the song, Mike Myers (as Austin Powers) scolds her: "You're going the right way for a smacked bottom." Madonna smiles and coyly replies, "I hope so." (This video is available on YouTube.)

In 2007 Madonna appeared in a humorous television ad for fashion designer H&M that parodied her dominatrix image. She plays a bossy executive who uses a riding crop as a swagger stick. The commercial can be watched on YouTube.
