A Personal Note from Robin

On 16 Jan 2007, I did a telephone interview with Felix.

R: How and why did you get started with "archw.com"?

F: I had been a subscriber to "Rusty & Edie's BBS" (R&E). (I liked their work.) I had been to the various RenFaires and as I walked around, quickly discovered "The Stocks" and the especially the girls in the stocks, is where all the action was. I took several photos and sent the to R&E for their board. I got a lot of requests and email, and I thought it would be fun to have my own BBS. I liked the idea of having a place where photos, etc., were archived. The www.archives.com url was already taken, so I "grabbed" Archw (archives on the web) and the rest is history.

R: How and why did you use the BB(six digit) file naming convention?

F: About the time I started posting, computer file names were the old "eight-dot-three" format. Prior to starting Archw, photos were named "BAnnnnnn.jpg|" and after it started, I changed to a "BBnnnnnn" convention.

R: How did you come up with the story lines for some of you stories?

F: I was in college. One day I was driving around campus, and as luck would have it, I ended up on "Sorority Row". As I passed this one sorority house, they were taking two "pledges" out for some type of initiation of some form, as the two girls were handcuffed and blindfolded. Later, when I started writing stories, that image came back to mind. I chose "Pi Lambda Kappa" as a sorority name, because I couldn't find any real sorority using the name.

In 1987, I sent a copy of the story (in book format) to House of Milan for publication. They offered $700 if I would do some "proposed edits". I did the edits, and sent the story back to HOM. They never responded, so I was able to retain the rights.

With the issue of retaining rights to stories, I thought it would be wise to start a parallel story line, and came up with "Vacation Weekend in Mexico". I could see a beginning, middle and end to that story, but wanted to have another ongoing, episodic story: that is when "An Easy Job" was born.

(I'll be adding storylines and samples as I get some time. R/)

I bumped into Phil Carson. He was working with Robert Q. Harmon of Harmony Concepts. As I photographer, I was a big fan of his work.

R: So, what's happening with Archw today, and what does the future hold?

F: In late 2006, I found that Archw was putting extreme demands on the time I had available. With the way the Internet (and especially Usenet) is going, I could see that "my market share" was being eroded by a small number of sites that produce high quality (and extremely high quantity) of work. Usenet has been swamped with spam, flame wars and "garbage" to the point that if I post, my work is lost in the "background noise".

I have decided to make the site less commercial and more archival in nature. While I do sell DVDs and CD-ROMs through the site to defray expenses, there are no longer any online subscription services offered, and no UseNET.

I'm not sure where Archw will go in the future. Several people (author's note: including me) and I have been talking about its future. For now, I want to control the content, so I am not posting on any other sites. I don't want my images to be on another site where it is presented with works of inconsistent artistic quality.
