The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the name Carl McGuire is perfection. Carl was a painstaking rigger who had the ability to visualize impressive ropework and the patience to execute it. When he encountered Bondage Life #1 in 1977, Carl was one of the very first to contact Robert Q. Harmon. On the one hand, he recognized that Robert's genuine, far-more-than-a-picture-book magazine was a landmark achievement for the bondage community; on the other, he candidly suggested that the rigging in several of the features left a great deal to be desired. Robert was delighted by the feedback and challenged Carl to raise the level of the ropework in BLs to come; the rest is history. Carl's favorite model was Maria Tortuga but he also worked with many other fondly-remembered Harmony models of the 1980s to produce exciting photographic contributions to BL and its sister publications.
For many media bondage fans in that pre-Internet period, however, Carl was even more highly regarded for his quarterly BL column, "Bound For Hollywood". Over the years, Carl reviewed hundreds of movie and TV bondage scenes, from the silent era to the latest perils of Heather Locklear on "T.J. Hooker" After reading his vivid and witty descriptions, the next step for his followers would be a trip to the video store to search for previously unknown treasures!
On a more personal level, I met Carl soon after arriving in Los Angeles to work for Harmony. Over the years since 1985, I was fortunate enough to spend time with Carl on many occasions; he was a courteous, literate and humorous man. We discussed a variety of bondage-related subjects, of course, but our conversations extended beyond, to politics, books, movies, and just about any other facet of life that came to our attention. I always left Carl with the feeling that my brain had been stimulated and my experience enriched. I'm saddened by the knowledge that I'll no longer be able to benefit from Carl's humane intelligence at first hand. But he's left a legacy in our field that's second to none and memories that his many friends will always treasure.

A Personal Note from Robin
I always looked forward to each and every issue of Bondage Life. Carl's column was a a bright point in my month.
I would cross-reference his research with my library, TV guide and local newspaper movie adverts to help build my agenda for the upcoming weeks. The closing of Bondage Life meant the loss of Carl's columns as well as the demise of my much loved reading material.
