Black Lace (publisher) specializes in erotica and erotic romance written by female authors specifically for heterosexual female readers. The imprint does not publish novels written by men partly as a marketing scheme, partly to better appeal to their target demographic. The books explore women's sexuality as well as such themes as BDSM, group sex and bisexuality. The imprint began publishing in 1993, has published over 250 titles and sold over three million books. In 2006, Black Lace developed three specific lines within the imprint: contemporary, historical and paranormal. Black Lace also publishes short story anthologies, novella collections and in 2007 launched its first trilogy, a series of werewolf erotica by Mathilde Madden. The imprint marked its fifteen-year anniversary in 2008 with re-issues of several of its original novels. In 2009, Virgin Publishing announced that Black Lace would add no new titles in 2010. The line was relaunched in 2012.

EWbury Announcement

Ebury Publishing [Note 1]is relaunching its Black Lace erotica[1] imprint, as E L James' Fifty Shades of Grey storms the charts.

The imprint, originally launched by Virgin Books in 1993, was put on hold in 2009 but will be revived in September.

Editorial director Gillian Green said: "It's still the best known erotic fiction imprint in the UK and we’ve seen huge growth in our digital sales on the list. In light of this, we decided the time was right to relaunch the list this September with a brand new look."

Green said it was "serendipity that we are relaunching our list at a time when E L James is taking erotic fiction into the mainstream. We’re really thrilled by E L James’s success but the fact that women enjoy reading sexy books was hardly news to us here at Ebury."

Black Lace has "classic" titles including Lucinda Carrington’s The Ninety Days of Genevieve and Justine Elyot’s On Demand on its backlist and Green promised there were titles in its forthcoming list that were "even steamier than Fifty Shades of Grey".
