A pirate is a robber at sea, or one who plunders the land from the sea, without having a commission from any sovereign nation. Piracy has existed for as long as people have used the oceans as trade routes, and exists to the present day.

Pirates, especially those of the 18th century, have entered popular culture in various ways and often in romanticized fiction. Interestingly, their criminal ruthless brutality is usually part of the romanticized image, and pirates are portrayed as heros and anti-heros alike. Stereotypical attributes of pirates in fiction include:

  • wild, uncivil appearance; ragged and unconventional clothing
  • all kinds of weapons
  • injuries from previous fights, such as lost eyes, hands, or legs, with artificial limbs
  • pirate ships (e.g. with ragged or black sails, and the Jolly Roger flag)
  • pirate slang, alcohol, and songs
  • speaking parrot or other exotic pet
  • sunken or buried treasure
  • curses and superstition
  • supernatural phenomena such as ghosts or monsters at sea

The Jolly Roger symbol also exists in many fonts, such as here:

Pirates in spanking art

Pirates are found in some spanking stories and in spanking art, e.g. the fan art drawings by Barbossasdaughter with characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

An example of a spanking story with a pirate theme is The Cabin Boy by Lurking Dragon.

Mainstream films and adult videos

Swashbuckling pirate adventure yarns were a mainstay of the film industry from the silent era to the 1960s. In recent years there has been a resurgence in popularity due to the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean features starring Johnny Depp. So far, there have been four films in this series released between 2003 and 2011.

This in turn has inspired imitations and parodies. For example, Pirates (2005) and Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge (2008) are lavish "swash and unbuckle" pornographic videos produced by Digital Playground. Another porn parody is Butt Pirates of the Caribbean (2005) from Seymore Butts.

Pirates, who frequently resort to flogging punishments, have also been the subject of sadomasochistic fantasies. One tongue-in-cheek example is the music video Danish band Aqua made for their 1990s hit "My, Oh My". The lead singer Lena Nystrøm is tied to a mast and whipped by sadistic pirates.
