The exhibition German Leather Museum or LEATHER.WORLD.HISTORY. forms a cross-section of the unique holdings of the German Leather Museum and presents highlights of the extraordinary collection on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the museum.
In four overarching thematic groups - the leather city of Offenbach am Main, living with leather, leather makes history and leather opens worlds - diverse insights into the world of leather and its functional and design methods are offered. Using 130 exhibits selected as examples, the collection presentation illustrates which outstanding objects have found their way into the German Leather Museum since the museum was founded in 1917.
Exhibits from different epochs and cultures enter into an overarching dialogue and open up exciting cross-references. The selection was made with regard to their historical and artistic importance, but also from the point of view of being able to tell stories with them. For example, the oldest object in the collection, an Egyptian rawhide vessel, meets one from the 21st century, a noble, leather-covered headphone. Other combinations such as Pope Clemens IX's travel basket. (1600-1669), presented together with a holdall made of Tyvek®, a paper-like non-woven fabric, by Saskia and Stefan Diez, illustrate how travel accessories have changed over the centuries. Exhibits of prominent personalities can also be found in the exhibition:
A comprehensive publication was published by Kerber Verlag to accompany the exhibition. You can purchase these in the museum or order them via info@ledermuseum.de.
