A blanket is a large, usually rectangular, piece of cloth used for the following purposes:
- to cover one's body while sleeping in bed
- spread on the floor like a carpet, as a soft and comfortable surface to sit or lie on (e.g. for a picnic)
- to wrap oneself in to get (or keep) warm, e.g. after a cold day out
- for small children a conformable blanket, can be carried as a emotional security prop.
Blankets come in many types, such as quilts, duvets, and comforters, depending on their thickness, construction and/or fill material.
A blanket is usually warm enough that a person covered or wrapped up in it can be in underwear, sleepwear or fully naked for long times without feeling cold.
A folded or rolled-up blanket can also be used as padding, like a bolster or a pile of cushions.
