James Gillray (1757-1815) was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810.

James Gillray did at least four works of spanking art (early examples of spanking in caricature):
"Lady Termagant Flaybum going to give her step son a taste of her desert after dinner" (1786).
"A representation of the horrid barbarities practised upon the nuns by the fish-women, on breaking into the nunneries in France" (1792).
"Westminster School, or Dr Busby settling accounts with Master Billy and his Playmates ..." (1785.)
