Piper Laurie (born Rosetta Jacobs; January 22, 1932 – October 14, 2023) was an American actress known for her roles in films such as The Hustler (1961), Carrie (1976), and Children of a Lesser God (1986), as well as in the miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983). She is also recognized for her performances as Kirsten Arnesen in the original TV production of Days of Wine and Roses and as Catherine Martell in the television series Twin Peaks. She earned several accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for three Academy Awards and a BAFTA Award.

Early life Piper Laurie, originally named Rosetta Jacobs, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 22, 1932. Laurie was the younger of two daughters born to Alfred Jacobs, a furniture dealer, and his spouse, Charlotte Sadie (née Alperin) Jacobs. Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland, while her maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia.

Laurie was born, as detailed in her 2011 autobiography " Learning to Live Out Loud, " in a one-bedroom walk-up located on Tyler Street in Detroit, where her family resided. In an effort to address her shyness, her parents enrolled her in weekly elocution lessons.

Laurie's mother and grandmother placed Laurie's older sister in a sanitarium for her asthma, and Laurie was sent along to keep her company.

Personal life

Laurie was married to Joe Morgenstern, an entertainment writer for the New York Herald Tribune and a movie critic for the Wall Street Journal. (She had previously been in a relationship with actor and future U.S. president Ronald Reagan.) They were introduced shortly after the release of The Hustler in 1961, when Morgenstern conducted an interview with her during the promotion of the film. Shortly thereafter, they commenced a romantic relationship, culminating in their marriage on January 21, 1962, nine months following the interview. When no significant roles were offered to her after The Hustler, she and Morgenstern relocated to Woodstock, New York. In 1971, they adopted a daughter, Anne Grace Morgenstern. The couple divorced in 1982, following which she relocated to the Hollywood area and persevered in her career in films and television.

In 1962, she was honored as Harvard's Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year. In 2000, she was bestowed with the Spirit of Hope Award in Korea for her distinguished service during the Korean War. Additionally, she made an appearance at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland, in September 2014.

Laurie was also a sculptor who worked in marble and clay.

Death

Having been unwell for some time, Laurie died in Los Angeles on October 14, 2023, at age 91.
