Sugar dating, Sugaring, also known as sugaring, is an interpersonal relationship in which a financially successful person dates someone less financially successful (hypergamy). The financially successful individual is typically older and wealthy, whereas the other person is usually younger, attractive, and interested in enhancing their quality of life. Sugaring can be classified as a compensatory relationship, where the recipient receives gifts such as jewelry, luxury goods, leisure outings, vacations, fine dining, financial support, or mentorship, while providing social benefits like companionship, affection, dating, or intimacy.

The gift recipient is known as a sugar baby, while male sugar babies are referred to as gigolos. The partner providing support is called a sugar daddy or sugar mommy. Sugar dating is particularly popular online because it offers easy access to specific niches and desires.

Prevalence

The phenomenon of wealthy men using their money to attract women is longstanding. By the end of the 19th century in the United States, a practice known as "treating" had emerged, where women in low-paying jobs relied on men to provide them with money in exchange for acting as escorts.

With rising tuition costs, cuts to scholarships and bursaries, and increasing pressures from student debt, sugar dating has become prevalent among students. Research suggests a growing trend of female university students entering the sex industry to fund their post-secondary education. Due to the nature and stigma surrounding sex work within marginalized and hidden populations, there is limited information on the percentage of students engaging in these types of relationships. Those who choose to participate in sugar often connect with others through various websites. In 2016, membership on one site cost US$70 per month for sugar daddies or mommies, while it was free for sugar babies.

Economic conditions, societal norms, psychological traits, and cultural values influence attitudes toward sugar relationships. Research has found that openness to these arrangements is associated with traditional gender roles, sociosexual orientation, parasite-stress theory, economic inequality, individualism, and personality traits such as the Dark Triad.

Legality and comparison to sex work

There is ongoing debate about whether this practice qualifies as sex work, meaning the purchase of intimate attention, sexual or otherwise. In an article from Deutsche Welle, the CEO of SeekingArrangement denied that the site hosted prostitutes and their customers, asserting that "escorts and their clients are never welcome on our sites. "

In Malaysia, sugar dating is illegal, so the CEO of the Malaysian sugar dating company Sugarbook was arrested and Malaysian Internet service providers blocked their website.

Sugaring has been described as the modern-day counterpart of the courtesan, defined as "a prostitute, especially one with wealthy or upper-class clients."
