1860, Normandy, France. In a village near the sea, the young orphan Charles (Paul Courtois), whose parents have died, is raised by the evil and tyrannical widow Mac'Miche (Alice Sapritch). Despite the goodwill of the servant Betty (Bernadette Lafont), Charles is always punished and whipped. |
As soon as he can, he begins to meet with Juliette (Géraldine Guyon), a blind girl who is 2 years older to him.
The spanking scene
The movie has no less than seven corporal punishment related scenes for its 10-year-old hero:
- Showing the marks
- Receiving the martinet
- Spanked in bed (this scene has to be seen to be believed as it looks very authentic and the actor complained that he was bruised for 3 days)
- A hand printing session
- Preparing for a caning
- Seeing a boy whipped with a martinet in the dormitory
- Seeing a line up of boys being whipped with a martinet
The novel
The novel Un bon petit diable was written in 1865 by the same author who also wrote Les Petites Filles modèles, another children's novel that features a lot of corporal punishment. The setting of the original novel is Scotland in 1848. The novel was illustrated by Horace Castelli.
