Lady (with a capital L) is the female counterpart of a Lord. The term lady (in lower case) is a term for any respectable woman, usually implying things like good manners, posh dress, and possibly a high social status, corresponding to the male term gentleman. There is also an adjective ladylike that means "in the ways of a lady".

In some contexts, the title lady may also be ironically used, or even imply a lower status than woman -- for example, compare "chairwoman" and "cleaning lady". See the Wikipedia article for more on this somewhat complicated topic.

In spankophile contexts, the title "lady" or "Lady" may be used for a woman of authority, who may be a spanker, or, ironically polite, for a female spankee, as in "I think this lady needs to be taught a lesson". The mode of address "young lady" is often used for a preteen or teenage girl when she is being reprimanded and/or punished, and thus comes with even stronger connotations of a spankee.

In BDSM, "Lady" plus first name (e.g. "Lady Anne", "Lady Victoria") is a common name convention for pro-dommes, even in non-english speaking countries.

Lady Carole is a spanking artist; Lady Green is an instructional spanking book author.
