Buttocks cleavage

Buttock cleavage is minor exposure of the buttocks and the gluteal cleft between them, often because of low-slung trousers. Traditionally considered unattractive, the buttock cleavage gained popularity in the 21st century.

History

When faced with indecency issues back in the 1930s, W.G. Cassidy explained in an essay titled "Private Parts: A Judicial View" that it may come under "other private parts" in described by the Australian Law, though indecency generally covers the genital area. In August 2001, The Sun celebrated a bum cleavage week claiming that "bums are the new tits". In the mid-2000s, Good Morning America reported on a rise of the popularity of buttock cleavage among celebrities. Social scientist Ariel Levy described the culture of low cut jeans that revealed butt cleavage, along with miniature tops that revealed breast implants and navel piercing, as examples of the rise of the "raunch culture" among women in her book Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture. The term was selected by the American Dialect Society (a group of linguists, editors, and academics) in January 2006 as the "most creative word" of 2005

Fashion trends

In the early 2000s it became fashionable for young women and men to expose their buttocks in this way, often in tandem with low rise jeans. The Cincinnati Enquirer called it the "new cleavage", and expressed views that "It's virtually impossible to find jeans to cover your hipbone". In reaction to this trend, Saturday Night Live aired a parody advertisement for a product called Neutrogena Coin Slot Cream. Low-rise jeans sometimes also resulted in what is often called a whale tail-the appearance of the waistband of a thong or g-string above the waistline of one's pants, creating a shape resembling a whale's tail. British designer Alexander McQueen was particularly mentioned as the originator of buttock cleavage revealing jeans, known as the "bumster", in cultural critique Sheila Jeffreys' Beauty and Misogyny: Harmful Cultural Practices in the West. United States Patent 6473908 registers a design for buttock cleavage revealing trouser designs

Buttock Cleavage in Popular Culture

In an episode of the Simpsons, Homer's cleavage was used by Lenny as a target for a pencil, dropped into Homer's cleavage. This distracted Homer's train of thought, and was used to comical effect. In Australia, the buttock cleavage, known as buttcrack or coinslot, was regularly used in portrayal of blue-collar workers such as plumbers or electricians, originating from the positions tradespeople (sitting, kneeling, squatting, etc), and the loose fitting attire of the professions. As white-collar workers tend to tuck their shirts in, the exposed crack became synonomous with tradespeople.

Muffin Top

Muffin-top" is a generally pejorative, slang term used to describe the phenomenon of overhanging flesh when it spills over the waistline of trousers or skirt in a manner that resembles the top of a muffin spilling over its paper casing. This generally occurs when an individual wears low-rise, hip-hugger pants, or midriff-baring tops that are too small.

Origin

Muffin-top originated as Australian slang in mid-2003, but has since become popular in other English-speaking countries. It may have been first popularized by the Australian television show Kath & Kim. Australia's Macquarie Dictionary named "muffin-top" the word of the year in 2006; the American Dialect Society named it one of the "most creative" new terms that same year.

According to William Safire, writing in the The New York Times Magazine, "Muffin-top fills a lexical void" and "describes the roll of excess flesh spilling out primarily in front but possibly all around."

Whale Tail

Whale tail is the waistband of a thong or g-string when visible above the waistline of low-rise jeans, shorts, or a skirt creating a shape resembling a whale's tail. A closely related exposure of underwear is when it is seen through the clothing, which is called a visible panty line (VPL).

Fashion phenomenon

Whale tail, thong exposed from top of low-rise jeansThe whale tail is exposed above the trousers mostly when sitting or bending, or even permanently, depending on the style of trousers the style of underwear, and the way they are worn. The appearance of this Y-shaped fabric termed a whale tail may be deliberate or unintentional. Specially designed trousers like low-rise jeans or hip-huggers and higher cut thongs lead to greater exposure of the whale tail. The increased popularity of low-rise jeans has led to increased exposure of the whale tails in the late 1990s. The phenomenon has been compared to the phenomenon of visible bra straps.

The layered clothing trend of the early 2000s is led by the whale tail style that incorporates hip-hugger jeans, crop tops and high riding thongs popularized by Britney Spears and Anna Kournikova. The Oregonian, a Portland, Oregon newspaper, wrote in 2004 that whale tails had become a distraction in the campus.
